    GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
    The Writer and Editor writes original content for the organization, including interviews, news stories, features, meeting summaries, profiles and other content that appears online and in State Legislatures magazine. The position also edits content created by NCSL staff for webpages, meeting content, presentations, reports, white papers, briefs and news stories. The work occurs in a fast-paced environment, as the documents we create inform state legislators and staff across the country about the latest information and trends surrounding public policy. The position reports to the Program Director of Editorial Content.
     
    RESPONSIBILITIES AND EXPECTATIONS:
    As part of the Communications team, the position will work closely with the four members of the Editorial Content team. Duties will include:
    • Working with editorial team on a daily basis to create and edit content
    • Writing long- and short-form content, including articles on public policy, meetings, member profiles, and other news of importance to state legislatures.
    • Editing and proofreading the work of NCSL staff, and updating existing documents aligned with NCSL standards.
    • Researching information for stories.
    • Conducting interviews with internal staff, as well as state legislators and state legislative staff from across the country.
    • Coordinating with NCSL policy experts on documents and information for articles.
    • Participating in and contributing to team meetings to plan content for the communications division’s editorial calendar.
     
     
    SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
    This position has no direct supervisory responsibilities but could serve as a coach and mentor for other positions in the department.
     
    WORK ENVIRONMENT:
    This position is a mostly performed in an office environment with prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.  You will utilize standard office equipment such as filing cabinets, copy machines, laptops, printers, scanners, and smartphones. Travel by airplane including overnights and weekends required. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

    QUALIFICATIONS FOR SUCCESS:
    • Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of three years of relevant work experience.
    • A minimum of three years of proven professional experience in writing for publication. Journalism experience or writing for government agencies is strongly preferred.
    • Two years of editing experience with a professional organization, newspaper or association using a style guide. Experience with AP Stylebook is required.
    • One year of working in html code.
    • One year of experience working with web developers and content teams.
    • Possession of a portfolio of writing examples that reflect deadline writing skills.
    • Excellent initiative and creativity that will help make state legislatures stronger, meeting one of NCSL's mission to foster interstate cooperation and facilitate the exchange of information among legislatures.
    • Capacity to write in a politically balanced style that reflects NCSL’s bipartisan standards.
    • Ability to communicate and work with staff in the organization, within and outside of the communications division, as well as state legislators of both political parties and legislative staff who may be partisan or nonpartisan.
    • Ability to write in a nonpartisan manner
    • A basic understanding and appreciation of representative democracy.
