    Job Description

    Job Summary: The Controller is responsible for planning, directing, monitoring, and coordinating the accounting activities of Denver Botanic Gardens in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles, federal/state regulations, DBG policies and guidelines, and sound business practices.  

    Career Type:  Full-time

    Position Requirements:   Bachelor’s degree and active Certified Public Accountant designation required. Five years supervisory experience required. Strong interpersonal and communication skills. Required skills include extensive knowledge of personal computer applications and a demonstrated ability to understand and work with integrated enterprise software applications; ability to interpret and apply various accounting standards relating to not-for-profit institutions; ability to handle sensitive and confidential information with tact and diplomacy; and the ability to exercise independent judgement.

    Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

    • Ensure that accurate financial statements are prepared and maintained in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles.
    • Ensure the integrity of the general ledger, internal accounting controls and of all financial information; implement and maintain appropriate internal financial controls as necessary to safeguard Garden assets.
    • Responsible for coordination, preparation, and timely completion of annual external financial statement audit.
    • Strategize and coordinate the integration of sub-ledger systems with the general ledger.
    • Ensure that financial information systems meet the needs of Garden’s management and staff.
    • Establish and maintain processes for the financial administration and compliance needs of Federal, State, and private grants, including grant proposals and reporting.
    • Comply with all federal, state and local reporting requirements including, but not limited to: Federal Information Tax Returns (Form 990), Employee Benefit Tax Reports (Form 5500), Information Returns for Independent Contractors (Form 1099), Sales Tax and Occupational Tax Reports, City & County of Denver Annual Expenditure Plans.
    • Act as administrator for the corporate card program.
    • Manage the Accounting department to support DBG and the department’s objectives in the most efficient and effective manner, including providing supervision, coaching, training and support, and timely feedback; developing and promoting teamwork, and ensuring appropriate cross training.
    • Responsible for monitoring, analyzing and reporting of restricted and designated fund balances.
    • Preparation of monthly financial statements and reconciliations for Denver Botanic Gardens, Inc. and quarterly financial statements and reconciliation’s for Denver Botanic Gardens Endowment, Inc.

    Other Job Responsibilities

    • Assist CFO with the development of accounting policies and procedures; review on an ongoing basis and make recommendations for changes as appropriate. Communicate policies and procedures to staff and facilitate compliance with such policies.
    • Facilitate understanding and use of financial information by department and project managers through formal and informal training, developing financial reporting improvements, and acting as a DBG resource for questions regarding Accounting policies, cash management, financial statements, and other financial matters.
    • Manage Accounting budget.
    • Represents the Accounting department at special events.
    • Supervises special projects as deemed necessary by the Chief Financial Officer.
    • Keeps abreast of trends and developments in field, applies appropriate changes.
    • Works with all departments to assure highest quality experience for all DBG visitors.
    • Maintains a positive, helpful and solution oriented demeanor when responding to or serving members and visitors.
    • Performs other duties as requested by management.
